How to Choose the Perfect Marble Table

A marble table adds timeless beauty to a room, but choosing the right one takes a little thought. Here is a simple guide to help you choose a piece that fits your space - and lasts.

1. Start with space and purpose

Measure where the table will go, then think about how it will be used:

  • Dining table - allow roughly 60-75 cm of width per person.
  • Coffee table - should complement the seating without crowding it.
  • Console / side table - needs to sit neatly against furniture or a wall.

2. Choose the stone

Each marble has its own character. A few from our collection:

  • Carrara - white with soft grey veining; versatile and classic.
  • Calacatta Viola - bold, dramatic veining with violet tones; a true statement.
  • Marquina - deep black with striking white veins; perfect for modern, dramatic interiors.
  • White Mugla & Galala - calm, accessible neutrals for understated rooms.

Rarer stones are quarried in smaller quantities and waste more in cutting, so they sit at the higher end - see the full range in our Stone Library.

3. Consider shape and size

  • Rectangular - great for formal dining and long rooms.
  • Round - ideal for small spaces and a cosy, conversational feel.
  • Oval - the softness of a round with the capacity of a rectangle.
  • Square - works well in compact, symmetrical spaces.

Leave at least 90 cm around a dining table for comfortable movement.

4. Look at the base

  • Slim metal base - architectural and economical; lets the stone lead.
  • Solid marble (stone-on-stone) - the most luxurious and substantial; legs cut from the same stone.
  • Wood base - warm contrast, sitting between the two.

5. Check quality and finish

  • Thickness - a top of around 2 cm (or a built-up edge) gives presence and durability.
  • Finish - polished is glossy and elegant; honed is matt and hides marks better.
  • Sealing - a properly sealed top resists stains and everyday wear.

6. Factor in care

Marble is porous, so use coasters, wipe spills promptly, and reseal every 6-12 months. (See our guide on how to clean a marble table.)
